Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman Yojana 2021 has been launched by the Central Government to provide free food for 5 years to crores of children of government schools present in the country. Through the Pradhanmantri Poshan Shakti Nirman Yojana by the central government, benefits will be provided to all those children who are getting an education in government schools.
The Pradhanmantri Poshan Shakti Nirman Yojana has been launched by the Central Government. Through this scheme, nutritious food will be provided to the children studying in the primary classes. Till now the mid-day meal scheme was being operated by the government. Through which food was provided to the children. Now, this scheme will be included in the Pradhan Mantri Shakti Nirman Yojana. The scheme has been approved on 29 September 2021. Through this scheme, instead of just giving food to the children studying in the school, nutritious food will be provided. Which green vegetables and protein-rich food will be included on the menu.
Rs 1.31 lakh crore will be spent on the operation of the Poshan Shakti Nirman Yojana. Rs 54061.73 crore will be provided by the central government for the operation of this scheme and the contribution of the states will be Rs 31733.17 crore. The Center will provide an additional 45,000 crores to buy nutritious food grains. Apart from this, 90% of the expenditure for the operation of this scheme in the hill states will be borne by the Central Government and 10% will be borne by the State Government. Through this scheme, food will be provided to the students of primary classes in government and government-aided schools across the country.
This scheme will be operated from the year 2021-22 to 2025-26. State governments have also been urged to provide honorariums to cooks and cooking assistants through direct benefit transfer. The amount will also be made available to the schools through direct benefit transfer.
The main objective of this scheme is to provide nutritious food to the children studying in government and government-aided schools. This scheme has been started with the aim of eradicating malnutrition. Through this scheme, nutritious food will be made available to the children so that the children will be able to avoid being victims of malnutrition. About 11.8 crore children will be able to take advantage of this scheme. The expenditure on this will be borne by the Central Government and the State Government. Now the children of the country will not need to depend on anyone to get nutritious food. Because nutritious food will be provided to them by the government.

The central government today, on September 29, gave its nod to the PM-POSHAN (Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nutrition) which will subsume the Mid Day Meal scheme in government and government-aided schools. The scheme will cover 118 million students enrolled in classes 1 to 8 in over 1.12 million schools across the country. The Centre has announced that it would spend Rs 1,307.95 billion (1,30,795 crore) on the scheme in the next five years.
“The scheme is for the five-year period 2021-22 to 2025-26 with the financial outlay of ₹54061.73 crores from the Central government and ₹31733.17 crores from state governments and UTs administration. The Central government will also bear the additional cost of ₹45,000 crores on food grains. Therefore, the total budget of the scheme will be ₹130794.9 crores,” the government statement informed.
The central government has also announced that it will encourage community participation through the concept of ‘Tithi Bhojan’ which will provide ‘special food to children on special occasions and festivals. It also has plans to set up school nutrition gardens in schools.
As part of the PM Poshan Shakti Nirman scheme, the central government will also encourage cooking competitions to promote ethnic cuisines with Vocal4Local. Besides, provision for supplementary nutrition in aspirational and tribal districts and districts with a high prevalence of anemia will also be considered.
It is to be noted that the central government aims to eradicate malnutrition among children in India by 2022. In a bid to address malnutrition and anemia in the country, the Indian government has also decided to provide rice fortified with iron under its PDS and Mid-Day Meal schemes from 2024.
